1) The Smiths. Who could miss the story of Morrissey's coming-out in This Charming Man, set to Johnny Marr's African-influenced jangly guitar? Songs like Hand in Glove and William It Was Only Nothing showed fans that Morrissey's Oscar Wilde fixation was more than just lyrical.
2) Hüsker Dü. No, they weren't British but the feral roar that influenced everyone from the Pixies to Nirvana to Foo Fighters to Jimmy Eat World featured not one but two formidable gay songwriters: Bob Mould and Grant Hart. Considered the Beatles of 1980's hardcore.

Stratburst!
Thanks so much for stopping by, starting a conversation and mostly for dropping that 80s nugget. Yes, I concur re: Morrissey, however, sadly I've not heard of Husker Du. I'm off to read up on them on dogpile/google. I'll be back...

How times have changed. It was a good 20 years ago when Boy George could only say in simple terms that he would never marry or have children. I guess people hip to it at the time got it. It was a way of saying "I'm gay" without really saying "I'm gay." It's been a long time since I've heard the name Husker Du anywhere...I didn't know they were gay! Then again, around 1985 I didn't know George Michael was either and I had a huge crush on him. Oh well.
